I got bored and needed something to do with this footage as it turned into "in car" rather than "forward facing". I also got a new video editing software that has slow-mo
So hey, a lesson in double clutch downshifting from inside a spec miata. Not that you need to do it, but I learned how to race in a formula car with no synchros, and now I can't give it up.

Please feel free to comment and critique. It's going into big bend at Limerock, a double apex turn at the end of the front straight. |

I can't even imagine the pain my leg would be in if I had to do that. I raced at Barber few weeks ago with a new gearset specific to that track so I can use all six gears and now I downshift 13 times per lap, 1:28 per lap, 20 or so laps per race, qualifying and practice means 1820 downshifts in a weekend if I don't get held up. |

wow. That's a lot. At the Glen I generally only have 4 or 5 downshifts per 2:25 lap.....good old miata.
Of course I have more of a pain in my leg from being 6' 2" and shoe horned into the car, but that was my decision I guess. |

Wow that's crazy, but is it really necessary? Why can't you just downshift through the gears with the clutch in while revving matching the engine with the synchros as you go through them and then let the clutch out in the gear you want once you reach it? That's what I've always done.
Say I'm in 5th gear and want to go to 3rd, my technique has been...
clutch in throttle up, shift to 4th throttle up, shift to 3rd clutch out
Not saying your technique is wrong but it just seems like a lot of unnecessary work.

Or even faster coming from 5th brake brake and clutch in brake rev with heel to match engine speed to transmission shift to 3rd clutch out trail brake pass car in front
If you wait for the right road/transmission speed for the shift to 3rd no need to go through 4th.

It's not necessary, but I learned on a car with no synchros, where it was necessary and I can't break the habit. Someone once told me it helps to reduce wear on the synchros for endurance racing, so I may believe that.
As an aside, I did some non-double clutch downshifting in a race at NHMS last weekend. Coming into turn three in the miata you're doing about 90 mph in 4th gear (maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less depending on how brave you were in the big NASCAR 1 & 2) and go into a 2nd gear corner at about 40 mph. A few times it was "panic mode" as I was attempting a pass and it was straight from 4th to 2nd with a huge blip and hope for the best. If you watch the end of this video you'll see where I didn't get the blip right and had big time TCO during my qualifying. Whoops.
