An entry-level novice driver will always have an in-car instructor providing coaching. So, there is a necessity for the car configuration to provide an appropriate level of safety for the right-seat riding instructor. Thus, the category of cars that are "Lotus 7" replicas, are not considered suitable for use by a novice driver, because those cars do not provide minimum safety protection to the right seat passenger.

Owners of such cars that have done safety improvements over and above the original specifications should provide details to us for consideration of special exceptions. Such improvements would have to include wrap-around side impact protection bars, among other things...

A driver that is solo-qualified may use such a car at their own discretion, there is no requirement for an instructor to ride-along. However, there will be a restriction on having passengers.

A partial list of such cars:

Good call! There's something to be said for instructors who get into open top cars with or without a cage. Thanks for looking out for us!
