Posted - 04/27/2011 : 09:48:55 Just got back from the 14 hour Chump Car endurance race at Charlotte (Lowe's) Motor Speedway this weekend. We were able to pull off a big win with our Jacky Ickx GT30, crossing the finish line in first at 10pm Saturday.
We held 2nd or 3rd place most of the race and at sundown we were 2 laps down from the lead car (Infiniti J30) and gaining on them each lap when they crashed into the wall big time, knocking the driver unconscious, and catching fire, and red flagging the race for about 15 minutes. A Chump Car racer following behind stopped, got out of his car, and pulled the unconscious driver from the burning car. This put us in first 2 laps ahead of the car now in 2nd place and we were able to maintain first place until the end of the race.
Charlotte was a great track with high speeds on the banking and a challenging infield with off camber turns, banked turns, and elevation changes. About 50 cars started the race and about 30 finished after 14 hours. Our car performed great with the exception of inadequate lighting which we hope to addres before VIR in July. We had great handling through the high speed chicanes that were added to the straights helped offset being down a little on straight-line speed.
