Chin Motorsports - More Tracks, More Track Time!

events Event Formats

Dependent upon the track and event type, various formats and schedules are utilized.

Dual Groups: Two run groups are designated.
  • Group One includes entry-level novice drivers (instructor required), along with intermediate solo drivers (less than 15 solo events, or first visit to a track). Passing is permitted on straightaways only, with a point-by signal. NO PASSING without a signal, NO PASSING in turns.

  • Group Two includes advanced solo drivers, and instructors. Passing is permitted anywhere, with a point-by passing signal. NO PASSING without a signal.

The two groups alternate long, open track sessions, usually 55 minutes in length. This gives drivers freedom to choose when to go out, and promotes low traffic. The full schedule offers about 3.5 hours available track time daily, for each group.

TracQuest Format: This format is utilized at selected tracks. Only 3 run groups are designated:

  • Novice: entry-level drivers, with assigned instructors
  • Intermediate solo: drivers that have received a solo qualification, with fewer than 30 days experience
  • Advanced solo: drivers with years of experience, and a minimum of 30 track days as a solo driver.
For the novice category, point-by signals are required, and passing zones are restricted to straight-aways only. In the higher categories, point-by signals are required, and passing zones are unrestricted. The typical TracQuest event schedule provides for over 3 hours of available track time for each group during the day. Street cars and race-prepared cars are welcome. At selected venues, optional gourmet catered meals are also offered. See event descriptions for additional details.

Driver Classifications: All drivers are assigned to a category based on experience.

  • Novice: an entry level driver that is just beginning to acquire experience on road courses. An expert instructor is assigned to provide coaching. A novice driver will typically have an instructor assigned for the first several track days, while experience is acquired. Drivers that have prior experience in autocross, or karting, will have an accelerated learning curve, but, without road course experience, will still be classified as novice, and an instructor is required.
  • Provisional solo: This is appropriate for drivers with experience, that have soloed with other groups or at other tracks in the past. If it is your first event with CMS, or your first visit to a new track, then one of our master instructors will accompany you as a passenger in the opening session. You will get an orientation to the line, and your goal is to demonstrate clean, consistent, smooth laps, with excellent car control, and awareness of traffic, corner stations, and track conditions. You should already have excellent command of all the fundamentals of safe road course driving. Upon the successful completion of the check-out ride, you will receive a solo qualification.
  • Intermediate Solo: A driver that has numerous track days experience, and has received substantial instruction. The driver has demonstrated satisfactory command of all the skills required to safely drive at speed on a road course. Solo status is assigned, and the driver is approved to participate without the supervision of an instructor.
  • Advanced Solo: Drivers with years of road course experience, and perhaps 30+ track events. Drivers in this category have done thousands of laps, and have driven at numerous different tracks.
