What Should I Do To Prepare My Car For A Track Event?

Your car will be subjected to much greater stress that it normally receives in every day street driving. Therefore, it is VERY important that all problems are repaired, that all worn and partially worn parts are replaced, and that all fluids are clean and fresh. We recommend that you start by having your car inspected by a qualified auto repair shop and have all questionable items corrected. A typical pre-track inspection will take about 1 hour and is cheap considering the potential consequences to yourself and others. The following tech inspection (pdf) form should be completed and signed by a qualified mechanic:

Braking system:

[ ] fluid is clear, reservoir is full  [ ] pedal is firm  [ ] all brake lights are working
[ ] master cylinder - no leaking or corrosion   [ ] calipers - no leaking  [ ] pads are less than half worn
[ ] rotors show no signs of cracks, discoloration or unusual wear

Suspension and steering systems:

[ ] wheel bearings are tightened  [ ] minimal play in steering linkage   [ ] shocks - no leaks
[ ] bushings and pivot points show no signs of deterioration  [ ] wheels are not bent or cracked
[ ] tires are appropriate size and speed rating for car and adequate tread remains to complete the event
[ ] lugs are tightened to specifications

Engine and drive train:

[ ] engine supports show no signs of cracks and are secure [ ] belts are snug with no cracks or fraying
[ ] throttle linkage cables and cranks are functioning smoothly  [ ] throttle return springs are working
[ ] hoses are clean, smooth, tight and firm  [ ] coolant system is full  [ ] battery is secured appropriately
[ ] all wiring is properly harnessed  [ ] clutch functions smoothly without slipping
[ ] transmission has no leaks and shifts properly  [ ] drive axle has no leaks or excessive play
[ ] CV joints have boots in place with no leakage and make no noise  [ ] exhaust system is functioning

Driver safety:

[ ] original belts are in good condition or  [ ] a good condition 5 or 6 point harness system is employed
[ ] optional fire extinguisher is mounted securely  [ ] roll bar is in place for open cars

Other:

[ ] windshield has no large cracks  [ ] windshield wipers function properly
[ ] left side and rear view mirrors are secure  [ ] optional pedal covers are secure
[ ] please list any special conditions noted________________________________________________

At the hotel, every car will be subject to a "tech inspection" before being allowed to go onto the track. The intent of this inspection is to verify the car is in track worthy condition and that there are no loose items. Many items will be checked and of particular interest will be:

A completed and signed tech inspection (pdf) form _______
Battery hold down - must be tight _______
Brake Fluid - fresh _______
Brake Pads - thick _______
Lug Nuts - tight _______
Tires - no nails _______

At the track, the following items should be removed from your car - cockpit & trunk. (This means anything that isn't bolted down.) It's a good idea to have a waterproof container (plastic bags work well) where you can store everything removed from your car.
